Periodontal disease, which is also known as gum disease, is one of the most serious and dangerous dental issues that can attack your smile. If you’re not careful, it can irritate and infect your gums, make your gums recede from the base of your teeth, deteriorate your underlying bone, and result in loose and lost teeth. As you may already know, it’s best to prevent this disease altogether. To help you do so, Dr. Robert Morrison and our dental team have some helpful tips for you!

First, brush your teeth regularly. In fact, it’s recommended by the American Dental Association to brush your teeth twice each day. Brushing can help you remove the white film on the surfaces of your teeth, which is also known as plaque. Plaque is a harmful substance that promotes and creates gum disease. So make sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste twice each day to wash the plaque away.

Second, floss your teeth at least once a day. Flossing can help you remove the plaque that grows in the hard-to-reach spaces of your smile. If you don’t remove it regularly, it can quickly irritate your gums and promote the disease. So make sure you use your favorite flossing product and clean your smile daily.

Third, visit Dr. Robert Morrison twice a year for a professional dental cleaning and exam. These appointments are vital for your oral health because they include the only treatment that can completely remove the plaque from your smile. It’s best to receive a professional cleaning and exam every six months.
